Many Chryslers of the 70s are really good looking cars. The wife and I are watching Supernatural so I looked up 60s Chevrolets. Prices for 60s Chevys are crazy. 60s and 70s Chryslers   are cheap, and the 70s Chryslers are very good looking cars. Here are a couple from the local Craigslist:

Chrysler’s fuselage cars are cool as hell, but I don’t consider them malaise era. The ‘ 77 is for sure, though.

John Lennon agrees. He had a ‘72 Town and Country wagon for his final years that was great at hauling as it was great at blending into the traffic.

Officially, the Malaise Era ran from the start of the first oil embargo in October 1973 through 1983, when the economy had solidly recovered and average horsepower ratings also started to tick upward again.

Technically, Chrysler’s Fuselage era was only from the 1969-1973 model years, so they just miss being Malaise models (the new, post-Fuselage ‘74s launched in the fall of 1973, just as the embargo went into effect).

Here is a ‘78 Chrysler Newport from the middle of that period. I also really like the Plymouth Saporro / Dodge Charger / Mitsubishi Lancer A.

Counterpoint: The ‘79 Dodge Aspen that my parents bought new  was the biggest piece of shit ever. That car was why lemon laws were passed. It wasn’t a bad looking car for the era and it had the 318 so it should have been ok, but it definitely was not.

I’ve been thinking about getting one of These for a cruiser toy.  But it’s a tough sell especially when I don’t think my garage would swallow it up.  Either a 70s New Yorker or a 70s sedan deville.  So uncool their cool

Chrysler really made a solid effort to hang in there with traditional big cars. They were the last ones to do real metal grilles on mainstream cars, too.

Love me some fuselodge Mopar. They're not malaise by any means. I do like a lot of the actual malaise ones as well. They are a good value for a classic.

78 dodge aspen was steaming pile. Dad had one against his will. Company car . It tried to kill him 3 times. Slant 6 got awful mileage. It was the nail in the coffin for the ceo.

In the early 60s Chrysler was know n for their e ngineering less than 20 years later it was all shit. That makes sense it is more than half the length of someones career a lot changes in that time.

Even my grandfather who was a Plymouth car / Dodge truck man dating back to the 40s went GM in the early 80s. His last Plymouth was an early 70s  ex-police car with the 440. The last Dodge pickup was a late 70s. The car was wrapped around a telephone pole by my uncles and the truck was used up on the farm.

Starting in the 60s, if you got a good Mopar, it was excellent. If it was bad, it had to be downright awful. Arguably, the same still applies today ..

Harry S. Truman and Bess Truman had a 1972 Newport , although Mr. Truman probably never drove it.

The Malaise Era is only 1973-1983 because Murilee Martin devised the term, and defined it as such.

N.B. - TTAC is pretty awful from a commenting and theroizing POV, but it’s where some of Murilee’s work is hosted.

My grandpa had a 78 Dodge Magnum with the “lean burn” 360 . Was a great car to drive. Extremely comfortable/cushy, yet not overly wallowy. Enough power for a cruiser. Excellent fuel economy (26 mpg hwy, 22 mixed).

Looked like this:

Yep, he made it up, so he gets to define it. But, that was his rationale for the start and end dates, he didn't just pick two years at random.
